Connected Libraries recognises the growing diversity of home languages and cultures in the communities we serve. We are always aiming to improve and develop our collection of resources in languages other than English (LOTE) and resources to support those learning English.
In our branches
Our collections include materials in Chinese, Sinhalese, Persian (Dari & Farsi) and Panjabi. Other languages are available in our bilingual storybook collection, and there are magazine collections in Italian, French, Hindi, Malayalam, Gurajarati, Tamil.
In addition, home language resource kits for children, families and educators are available from Cranbourne library.
If you cannot find something in your language, you can request an inter-library loan or ask us for help.
In other libraries
You can find a list of languages in other Victorian public libraries here. Bulk loans of items in other languages are available by arrangement with your local library.
In our digital library
You can also read newspapers in 60+ native languages via PressReader, or watch films on Kanopy in other languages.
Online
You can download readers designed to help children enjoy reading in many languages from RUMACCC here or read African storybooks here.
In our branches
We have a special English Language Support section with materials for those learning English as an additional language (EAL) and those studying for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. You can find these materials in library branches, or put a hold on them online on the catalogue. You can also find the Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond in different languages on the catalogue.
You can practice your English conversation skills in conversation classes held in our libraries.
In our digital library
Your library card gives you access to the Road to IELTS online resource, which can help you prepare for your exam.
For those learning another language we offer many resources in our Language & Literature sections in our libraries. These include books with audio discs to help you learn.
You can also put items on hold via the catalogue.
