Living in Australia - new learning English online service

Living in AustraliaWe are pleased to announce the launch of Living in Australia, a new online service to help new Australian residents to learn the English they need to live and work in Australia.  Provided by NSW Adult Migrant Education Service (AMES), the service is delivered online via modules and is available to access - FREE - with your library card, via the library website (under Online Resources - Language).

"This online English course gives you the skills and confidence to listen to English and to read, write and speak in the language. Learn the grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and language structures needed to understand basic conversations and instructions, ask questions, talk about familiar topics and take phone messages. Learn to read simple information texts, complete forms and write short descriptions.

Topics covered:

  • Shopping, sports, hobbies, travel
  • Introductions, greetings, questions and answers
  • You and your family, neighbours, friends
  • Culture, weather, work, advertisements

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

Living in Australia: Beginner Master basic skills

The living in Australia: Beginner general English course gives you the skills and confidence to listen to English and to read, write and speak in the language. Learn the grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and language structures needed to understand basic conversations and instructions, ask questions, talk about familiar topics and take phone messages. Learn to read simple information texts, complete forms and write short descriptions.

BEGINNER LEVEL – Equivalent to IELTS 3.0

Living in Australia: Pre-intermediate

Extend your boundaries The Living in Australia: Pre-intermediate general English course develops your language skills and confidence to read and write more challenging texts, to listen to longer spoken texts and to participate in longer interactions. Learn the grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and language structures needed to participate in more complex conversations and exchanges. You will learn how to initiate negotiations and transactions, read and analyse more complex information texts and express your opinion in writing.

PRE-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL – Equivalent to IELTS 4.0

Living in Australia: Intermediate

Engage globally Living in Australia: Intermediate general English course develops your language skills to function with confidence in an English–speaking environment. You learn to read and analyze written texts, to write effectively on a wide range of topics, to listen to complex exchanges and to speak fluently and accurately in English. Learn the grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and language structures needed to contribute actively in formal and informal conversations, transactions and interviews. INTERMEDIATE LEVEL – Equivalent to IELTS 5.0 Jobseekers Online Get that job This short online course provides you with the knowledge and develops the jobseeking skills you need to find work in Australia. It focuses on: resume writing, networking, cold calling, cover letters, writing a selection criteria statement and interview strategies.

ADVANCED LEVEL – Equivalent to IELTS 5.5+
