**NEW** Casey
Cardinia links to our past - a blog from our Local History Officer
with
snippets of local history.
The region of Casey-Cardinia has a rich and diverse history for its
community to enjoy. This was once the land of the Bunurong Tribe. Many
of the region's place names reflect this aspect of our history. White
settlement in the
region dates from the 1830s when the land was seized upon for farming.
Towns
like Emerald, Berwick and Cranbourne have been settled as communities
since
the 1850s, when populations in Victoria grew rapidly during the gold
rush.
Municipal life began in the region in the 1860s when the District Roads
Boards were formed to help maintain the developing communities.
Communitites
worked together to establish the first schools, to build their Post
Offices,
Shire Offices and Court Houses.
There are a range of interesting heritage
sites in the region to
visit such as the Berwick Cheese factory, the Fishermans Cottage in
Tooradin and Nobelius heritage park in Emerald. There are founding
families such as the Wilsons, Camerons and Nobelius to recognize and
important events such as
the discovery of the Cranbourne meteorites, establishing the first
Councils
and the draining of the Gippsland swamp to learn about.
