Family Search database.

The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (also known as the Mormons) maintain the Family Search data base which has the largest collection of free family history, family trees and genealogy records in the world.

Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages  Access copies of certificates (for a small charge)  

Public Records Office of The State Government Archive, includes shipping records, wills, divorce records and much more.

National Archives of Australia  Services offered to Family Historians can be found at The NAA has the Defence Records of all Australians that served in the two World Wars (see Military Records). You can also access records of some migrants who arrived after 1901.

Australian Cemeteries on  Information on cemetery locations and contact details. Many Registers are on-line.

German Headstones in Australia  Detlef Papsdorf has photographed headstones in Australian cemeteries with German or Wendish names. A great resource for tracing German immigrants.



Public Records Office of Victoria

Victorian Shipping Records are available on the Public Records of Victoria site at Go to Access the Collection > Digitised Records > Passenger lists.

Scottish Emigration Database

Database of over 21,000 passengers who embarked in Scotland between 1890 and 1960 for foreign shores.

The Ships list

This site has passenger lists for Australia, Canada, U.S.A and South Africa, ship pictures and descriptions, shipwreck information.


National Archives of Australia

World War One Service records have been digitised and the National Archives have commenced digitising World War Two records.

Australian War Memorial

AWM has the World War One nominal rolls, embarkation rolls and other records of soldiers that served in all conflicts. Click on the "People" tag to access the indexes.

Victorian Government Gazette

On-line Archive of all the Gazettes from 1836 to 1997. The Gazette covers all official notifications of Government and Legal activities and was the main way that the Government communicated with the Public. You may find your ancestor listed if they had ever been appointed to a Government post, granted land, registered a patent, become a Cemetery Trustee etc.

Divorce Index Victoria 1860-1900
