Oliver and the Seawigs By Phillip Reeve

Oliver Crisp's parents are adventures who are finally settling down, much to his delight. Unfortunately they find themselves trapped on an evil walking island, directed by an awful bully and it is up to Oliver to save them. With the help of his short-sighted mermaid friend, a talking bird, and a walking island of his very own, Oliver sets out to free his parents. A wonderfully imaginative and funny book, with heaps of humorous illustrations. I recommend this to the Diary of Wimpy Kid crowd, if they also love adventure stories.

The Case of the Deadly Desperados by Caroline Lawrence

Type of story: Adventure

Tell us about it:
If you like good adventure stories, then you won't want to miss The Case of the Deadly Desperados. The main character and hero within the book is 12 year old P.K. Pinkerton. P.K. becomes a Private Detective, and with clever detecting skills - eyes as sharp as a hawk, ears as keen as a rabbit, and sense of smell almost as good as a bear - is a natural for the job. The Case of the Deadly Desperados is set in America in the 1860's in the largely lawless Virginia City. Every second building seems to be a saloon bar where men gamble and drink. Fights break out constantly. Non-stop action and twists and turns are contained on nearly every page as P.K strives to bring criminals to justice.

Recommended holiday reading with a Western theme.

Asterix and the Picts

I grew up reading Asterix books. My uncle collected them and I enjoyed many afternoons reading and re-reading them.

So I was very happy to discover a new Asterix book - Asterix and the Picts.

Asterix and Obelix save a Pict - MacAroon and of course have to journey to Caledonia (now Scotland) to deliver him safely home. Of course there is plenty of fighting (the Romans and others), eating and fun along the way, as you always discover in an Asterix book.

If you love Asterix, graphic novels, fun plays on words and a good action packed story, that's not too long, then you will enjoy Asterix and the Picts.

If you haven't read Asterix books before, then you have a choice of 35 adventures to get you started.

Wolf and Dog by Sylvia Vanden Heede

Type of story: Animal

Tell us about it: 'Wolf and Dog' is one of my favourite junior books. Wolf and Dog are cousins. Wolf is wild. His manners are bad. He has fleas. His fur is grey and unkept. Dog, on the other hand, is tame. He has a boss, and sleeps in a basket. He can read. Wolf and Dog have their ups and downs. Sometimes they get along; sometimes not. Wolf, being bossy and tough, generally has the upper hand. See what happens, though, when Wolf and Dog enter Wolf's forest to scare off Wolf's arch-enemy - kitty! Finally dog manages to outwit Wolf but you'll have to read the book to find out how! The illustrations in this book are delightful. My favourite is an illustration of Wolf sitting down to devour his meal. His chair is made up of a couple of bones; his table consists of a tyre over the top of an old toilet. Recommended reading for anyone who loves a good story and who likes to laugh.

Then there is the Rainbow girls, Scarlet, Indigo, Violet, Amber, Saffron and baby Tishkin who went away without saying goodbye.

Layla, Griffin’s best friend, reader of hearts, and I have to mention Blue, the white dog with red freckles or is he a red dog with white freckles; and Zeus the one eyed crow.
