Song for a Scarlet Runner by Julie Hunt

Song for a Scarlet Runner by Julie Hunt is a great fantasy book nominated for a CBCA award this year. It is the story of Peat, a girl on the run after a great sickness has swept over her small town, and she is accused of creating it. Peat leaves behind her sister and the only life she has ever known. She runs into trouble in the form of a little red squirrel like animal that both hinders and helps her on her journey, and a very powerful Marsh Auntie who does the same. It reminds me a lot of the Rowan of Rin series by Emily Rodda – well written, strong plot and a believable and rich fantasy world.

The Lost Princess in Winter’s Grip

The Lost Princess in Winter’s Grip by Josh Kilen

This book was fantastic!!!! It was about an adopted princess being taken back from her adoptive parents and back to her original parents who were actually ice witches!! After she had been in there for a couple of years, a prince, named Ryan, came to save her. Together they travel to collect the two gems of the southern tribes. The north tribes were the ice people. Annabeth is the living key to true justice. I don't want to spoil the surprise, so if you like this review, you might wanna read the book!!

Trackers

Trackers Book One by Patrick Carmen

This is a really cool book of which I love. It's about this group of Trackers, whose names are: Adam, Lewis, Finn & Emily. The book is really cool. It is about that group of Trackers which get into a really bad situation of which 2 people are trying to trick tem into working for them. Luckily it was a good job, but the Trackers didn't know that. So they went through a very bad situation and found themselves working for the Internet Security Department, (ISD).

The BFG

The BFG by Roald Dahl

I think The BFG is a great book. It's about a little girl named Sophie and a giant called the BFG (big friendly giant). The BFG gives sweet dreams to children but if they see him he takes them back to his cave where he keeps his dreams in jars and he has ginormous ears as big as truck wheels and he can hear a lady- bug crawling on a leaf and I like the part when the bloodbottler almost ate him.

The Valley Of The Lost

Deltora Quest:  The Valley Of The Lost by Emily Rodda

This book was awesome. The three companions Lief, Barda and Jasmine looked for the last gem to go in the belt of Deltora. The belt of Deltora was stolen in the first book The forests of silence. The last gem is the diamond. They have to find out the guardians first name to win the diamond and take it back to Del. His name was Endon. I haven't read it all yet so I don't know what happens next.

The Thing About Luck by Cynthia Kadohata

Tell us about it:
Bad luck seems to be chasing Summer and her family. Family members are sick, Summer has had malaria and her brother has no friends. Since her parents had to return to Japan to look after elderly relatives, it is up to Summer and her grandparents to work as part of a 'combine crew' during harvesting season in the United States of America.

It is very hard work too, with Summer helping to cook for the harvesting team. Then her grandfather becomes ill and Summer has to find a way to turn their luck around.

A major theme in this book is family relationships but there is also a lot of humour which balances the more serious issues.

Recommended reading.

Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse by Chris Riddell

Ada Goth lives with her father, Lord Goth of Ghastly-Gorm Hall. Her mother died years ago while practising tight-rope walking on the roof of the Hall, and her father has withdrawn from society to write extremely long sad poems. Ada must wear large boots at all times so her father (who believes that children should be heard and not seen) does not bump into her accidentally, bringing back memories of his wife.

Ada is lonely and her life lacks excitement but all this changes when she meets the ghost of a mouse who died in the Hall. She decides to look into the mystery surrounding his death and on the way stumbles into a scheme concocted by the horrible caretaker Maltravers. What terrible surprise does he have planned for Lord Goth's annual hunting party this year? Read it to find out!

This book is full of humorous literary allusions that may be missed by its target audience, but it's still a fun, action-packed story, written and beautifully illustrated by Chris Riddell. It also might encourage its readers to get into the Romantic and Gothic fiction that it lampoons in its pages. I loved it.

Learn how to draw the mouse in the book in the video below!

Fortunately the Milk by Neil Gaiman

Mum’s away.
Dad’s in charge.
There’s no milk.

So what happens when your dad goes to get milk?
Does he meet globby green aliens in a huge silver disc?
Or perhaps a scientist stegosaurus driving a hot air balloon, or as she calls it Professor Steg’s Floaty-Ball-Person-Carrier?

Did he meet pirates…or perhaps talking ponies?
Were there angry volcano gods wanting human sacrifices?
Did he meet intergalactic police and wumpires?

If not, if your dad does the usual boring go-to-the-shops-to-get-milk, then this book is for you.

Where dads have adventures.

Or do they?

Fun read, highly recommended.
