Inter-library loans and Suggestion for Purchase

Inter-library Loans - titles you want to borrow from the library

Please note: if you want to place a Suggestion for Purchase, please follow the instructions as per inter-library loan below, but in the Special Instructions box please include that you want the library to purchase the title for its collection.

When you are looking for a title, our catalogue is usually where you start. Be sure to search ALL LIBRARIES if you can't find what you are looking for at first.

How?

On the main catalogue screen, to the left of the search box, click on the arrow next to Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation and then click on All Libraries. Proceed with your search and it will then be across all the catalogues in the system. If the item is found, you can place a hold on it as usual and you will be notified when it arrives at your library to collect.

All libraries

If you still can't find it?  Then you can go broader in your search for the elusive title. Library Link Victoria (http://www.llv.net.au) is a catalogue of most of the 45 public library services in Victoria.  There is no charge to obtain a title from another public library in Victoria.

1.    Go to Library Link (http://www.llv.net.au) and click on Sign in at the left of screen. Enter your Library User ID, password and Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation as Library Service, to login.

ILL Login

2.    Once logged in, you will be taken to the search screen. Ensure that the libraries being searched are All Victorian Public Libraries. (if not, change it by clicking the down arrow next to Current Profile and clicking on All Victorian Public Libraries)

               All Victorian Public Libraries

3.    Type your terms into the search box and click Search. (as it is searching 45 catalogues, it may take time to finish searching)

ILL Results screen

4.    Be sure you have exactly what you are looking for by clicking on the title. You will sometimes find conflicting information in the search results.  eg. Record says it is a book format, but extended title shows sound recording.

5.    The summary also tells you which Library Service holds the title. If the title is NOT held by Casey-Cardinia, click on the Get it! link at the top right of screen. (If Casey-Cardinia does have it, please go back to the catalogue and place a hold on the title)

           ILL details

5.    The Request form will be pre-populated with some  details of the title.

       ILL request

6.    In the Special Instructions box at the bottom of the form, please add the following additional information:

  • which library you would like to collect the title from
  • whether you are willing to pay an ILL charge. Cost for an ILL from a charging institution is $16.50.
  • whether you want to proceed if the item can only be used in the library and not taken home
  • if another title on the same subject is OK or it must be this specific one?

Then click the Request button at the bottom of the screen to submit your request.

7.    You will be shown a receipt to acknowledge that your request has been received.  Please feel free to print it if you would like to keep a copy.

                ILL receipt

8.    To track what requests you have entered through Library Link, click on My Requests in the left hand menu.

9.     You will be contacted by the library when your title arrives for collection. (This will not generally happen as quickly as it does for holds placed within our catalogue)

If you still can't find the title.....

You can also use LibraryLink to search Victorian University Libraries (just change the Current Profile on the search page). We can order titles from University Libraries, but you will have to pay a charge of $16.50 per title to do so.

If you are unsuccessful using LibraryLink Victoria (that rascally title will just not be found), it is not the end yet. The National Library of Australia has a wonderful resource that searches not only their catalogues, but their recorded holdings of libraries across Australia, including academic and special libraries.

Trove is free to search, so try there. If you find it there you can contact library staff  to help you, or use the Create Request option within Library Link Victoria.  If you opt to use Create Request, please include as much information as possible in the Special Instructions box at the bottom of the form, including:

  • which library you would like to collect the title from
  • whether you are willing to pay an ILL charge. Cost for an ILL from a charging institution is $16.50.
  • whether you want to proceed if the item can only be used in the library and not taken home
  • if another title on the same subject is OK or it must be this specific one?
  • whether the title is new or old
  • publication or release date and if a movie, who starred in it
  • where you found out about it

Then click the Request button at the bottom of the screen to submit your request.  The process from then on is the same as from Point 7 onwards (see above).

If you still can't find it, feel free to ask library staff for help (we like a challenge) and we will see what we can do.
